Speedweaving/Ribbon Method

European 4 in 1 is one of the oldest known chainmail weaves, originating more than 2000 years ago. European 4 in 1 is fundamental in many other Chainmail weaves, You should start here if you’re beginning to learn.

This "Speedweaving" technique is also known as the Ribbon Method.

Is it faster than other methods?
--Possibly, it definitely feels faster than other techniques though the actual speed really is individual to each person.

 

1.  Begin by opening one ring and closing four jump rings.

2.  Place the four closed rings inside the Open ring.

3.  Close the open ring and arrange it as shown below, This is one "unit" of European 4 in 1.

4. Work ahead as much as you can.

Pre-close and pre-open a whole bunch of rings.  Pre-close twice as many rings as you pre-open.

5. Put two closed rings onto one open ring.

Insert the open ring(shown in Gold) through two rings(shown in red) in the unit from step 3, then close it.

Repeat step 5, put two closed rings onto one open ring.

Insert the open ring(shown in Gold) through two rings(shown in red) in the unit from step 3, then close it.

Keep repeating step 5 until you have a long ribbon!

Option A: Side Zipper

1. Put two closed rings onto one open ring, then insert the open ring(indicated in Gold) through two rings(indicated in Red) on the edge of your Ribbon.

2. Now take 1 closed and 1 open ring(Gold), then put the Gold ring through 3 (Red) rings.

Keep repeating Step 2 for the rest of the full length of your ribbon.

That's the side zipper method, at least that's what I call it! 

Keep adding rings like in steps 1 & 2 to make it wider if desired.

Option B: Ribbon Joining
1. To join multiple ribbons, position the ribbons next to each other and insert an open ring(Gold) through four closed rings(Red) on the edge of each ribbon.

2. keep inserting new rings in between each ribbon, it gets easier as you go.
